THE Umgungundlovu Fire Department trained uMshwathi Municipality employees in the use of fire equipment that complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The purpose of training was to ensure the avoidance of risks of fire in the workplace.

Training covered the different classes of fire as follows:

Class A - solid material such as paper and wood - fire can be treated by water and dry powder application.

Class B - flammable liquid such as diesel, petrol, thinners and paint.

Class C - fire involving electricity.

Both class B and C are treated with CO2 and dry powder.

Nathi Ntuli, an occupational health officer at uMshwathi Municipality advised staff members to adhere to the proper procedures to fight fire.

“If procedures are not followed properly in the use of equipment, this can cause more damage and put life and properties in danger.”
