POLITICIANS, residents and family members of the late mayor of uMshwathi Municipality, Siphindile Zondi-Mbhele (43), gathered at Mtulwa sports field to pay their last respects on February 23.

Zondi-Mbhele’s memorial service was held on Thursday, February 21 and on Saturday, February 23 she was laid to rest at a funeral service in Mtulwa. Zondi-Mbhele died in hospital on February 17 following a short illness.

Politicians and friends expressed their sadness at the passing of the mayor and paid tribute to her dedication and commitment to improve the lives of uMshwathi residents.

Deputy mayor Mlungisi Dlamini said: “She was dedicated to her work. Her aim was to improve the lives of the people from uMshwathi Municipality. She was always at the forefront in matters of service delivery.

“I worked with her in the municipality and the mayor was a mother and sister to me. When I needed something, I would approach her without even making an appointment. As uMshwathi Municipality, we have lost a champion of service delivery.”

Communications manager Sibusiso Mkhithi said: “Her intellect and leadership skills that sought to resolve problems and keep people united were highly praised.”

As speakers led the tribute, they told mourners how the mayor joined politics at a young age, at the height of political turmoil, and of her unwavering commitment to the future dispensation that we are witnessing today. Her commitment to sound municipal administration that served the community was equally praised.

Mourners remarked that she was fuelled by love for humanity and her family. They added that “around her, everyone felt welcomed and valued”, adding that “thousands of people were touched by her kindness, her persistence in pursuit of a better municipality, and her drive to accomplish as much as she could with limited resources.”

Speakers at the funeral also touched on the mayor’s interests in youth development programmes, education, social and cultural activities, remarking that, “the impact of her efforts can be seen here at every turn. But the true impact of her vision and generosity is evident around uMshwathi Municipality.

Her peers confirmed their commitment to furthering her mission for social justice, protection of vulnerable groups, and local development. The municipality and the Zondi-Mbhele family thanked all the people who attended the funeral.
