UMSHWATI’S young athletes are facing major challenges as although the municipality has built sportsgrounds, the required equipment has not been provided.

Selected athletes from high schools in the district took part in athletics trials at the Cool Air sports field in Ward 7 with a view to selecting a team to represent uMngungundlovu District.

However, it was so hot that the youngsters running without shoes found themselves suffering injuries due to the heat of the tar and unable to finish the race.

Prinicpal of Oqaqeni Primary School, Mr Makathini, who is the chairperson of the athletic committee, said that the athletes faced the challenge of having no equipment.

Mr Nkabinde of Matatane Primary, and secretary of the uMshwati athletics committee, requested that all the intergovernment structures and stakeholders work together to address this problem.
