THE Umshwathi Municipality began improving the quality of education starting with school visits last week.

Heading the team from KZN legislature was Chris Ntuli, the Umgungundlovu District Municipality team was led by Mayor Thobekile Maphumulo, and from Umshwathi Municipality there was Mayor Siphindile Zondi Mbhele. The KZN Department of Education team was headed by District Director Mr Mabinza. There were also representatives from Sadtu, SGB members and other government departments.

These teams visited schools to see what challenges the school face, for example a shortage of classrooms, the behaviour of pupils due to drugs, late in coming to school, poor sanitation facilities and lack of commitment by parents.

School personnel spoke with one voice on the many challenges affecting school performance.

The teams were impressed to discover that pupils were in class when they visited and lessons were under way.

The schools were cleaned with the assistance of the Umshwati Municipality the day before opening.
