UMVOTI has so much potential to attract tourists yet over the years it has never featured very high on “must-visit” lists nationally or internationally.
However, that is about to change, thanks to the Umvoti Community Tourism Organisation. A committee was formed sometime ago of interested people and has met regularly, being present at various events, circulated pamphlets on attractions in the area which have been placed at a number of outlets in and around Greytown.

The new logo - as can be seen in the heading - is being featured on shirts and other items that can be bought at very reasonable prices.

Having set up the basic establishment of the UCTO the next step in moving forward is the appointment of a suitable candidate to run the organisation – an advert for this position can be seen on page 11 of this issue.
Details of the brief for this position also outline the comprehensive coverage of the promotion of tourism in the area which will include:

• Update existing database and ensure that all businesses, clubs, associations and any other interested party is on the database with emails, cell phone numbers, physical addresses and other relevant information.

• Update the existing database to include all tourist attractions, facilities and amenities in and around Greytown.

• Liaise with the organisers of all events in Greytown, such as the mountain bike classic, golf competitions, motorbike rallies, the Jacob Zuma Marathon, and see where the UCTO can assist in the organisation and promotion of such events, to avoid events clashing and to investigate whether it would be beneficial to combine some events.

• Identify associations, organisations and other entities such as The Amble, the N3 Gateway, KZN Tourism to join or to liaise with to promote Greytown.

• Open and maintain accounts on all social media platforms.

• Distribute of UCTO flyers.

• Get a presence on all websites of local businesses.

• Find out what funding is available from the municipality, district municipality, tourism associations, government, Lotto and any other source, investigate funding models of other tourism organisations and draft a funding proposal.

• Make contact with nearby tourism associations to see whether we can develop a mutually beneficial relationship.

• Investigate the possibility of marketing the R74, which starts at Harrismith and ends at Blythedale Beach similar to Route 62.

• Draw up proposals to encourage visitors from the interior to go through Greytown to get to the airport and the Dolphin coast.

• Look into attracting visitors from major events hosted by Pietermaritzburg in Durban such as the Comrades Marathon, the Dusi Marathon, the Durban July and various other exhibitions and expos.

There is so much potential for the development and promotion of this area - the UCTO committee has been established to co-ordinate this potential and it is vital that all stakeholders become involved - suggestions and recommendations would be very welcome.

Contact UCTO chairperson Sean Slatter on or members Dumi Ndluli (deputy chair), Donsi Madonsela, Roy Harris, Cllr Vukani Njoko, Theresa Edwards, Msa Malinga LED and Tourism Umvoti Municipality.
