GOLF 911, the community for law and order plays an important role in the lives of all Umvoti residents. This was highlighted at the annual general meeting last month at which there was a good turnout and a number of new members, together with representatives from local businesses. At the meeting an outline was given of the management and control systems implemented, which ensure the effective and efficient running of the organisation. There are a number of positive and exciting projects in the pipeline for the year ahead, including the improvement of security, reduction of crime and availability of emergency medical services after hours. The Greytown Gazette felt that because of the importance of Golf 911, more information should be given to the public. In an interview G911 Manager Charles Haden said the call centre offered a direct link as it liaised with all the emergency services and works closely with SAPS, security firms, EMRS, fire brigade and many others. This valuable service is funded by the community, Umvoti farmers and the municipality.Anyone calling 033 417 2911 will get a response from one of the four personnel, who work in shifts 24/7 every single day of the year. They are Kenny Pillay, Riaz Cotwal, Jessica Barath and Keegan Pillay. The centre averages 400-plus calls a month on crime, fire, break-ins, animals straying, road closures, etc. Action is taken immediately with the relevant service being alerted by 911.Another feature is the daily early morning radio call-up to farmers - nine in Muden, 58 in Greytown, two in Seven Oaks and five in Rietvlei, checking that all are safe and secure. This is a voluntary service and farmers are welcome to join the call-up at any time. As a back-up participants are advised to ensure their radios are in working order and ready for use when needed. In regard to fire protection the district is covered by the Firehawk computerised cameras system. Details of smoke or fire detected by any of the eight computerised cameras are transmitted to the control centre in Lions River, which in turn notifies G911 to raise the alert in the Umvoti area. This system has been operating in Umvoti for the past three years and has proved to be of tremendous benefit in fire protection.Umvoti is very fortunate in having Golf 911 as an active and operative entity – many started in other centres at the same time have shut down. This wonderful community service has one fund-raiser a year - the Golf 911 fishing competition to take place on Saturday December 2 from Jondol in Mispah.
