A NUMBER of unroadworthy vehicles were impounded during Umvoti Municipality’s first festive roadblock over the weekend in Durban and Kelly streets.

The roadblock was headed up by the Community Services Directorate in conjunction with SAPS and the Road Traffic Inspectorate.

The mayor, Cllr TC Ngubane and Speaker, Cllr W Khoza were present.

The roadblock was supported by Santaco.

It was very successful in that numerous unroadworthy vehicles were impounded, taxi drivers fined for driving without permits and those without licences were taken off the road in the interest of public safety.

Santaco representatives drove said taxis back to the rank where licenced drivers were then assigned to safely drive passengers home.

Residents are advised to practice safety and caution on the roads at all times.

The municipality will be conducting “unannounced” roadblocks over the festive season in an effort to ensure the continued safety of all residents.
