There are 90 voting stations in Umvoti all of which were open for last weekend’s registration campaign.

With a total of 9 934 processed over the two days and 90 stations, Umvoti was not exactly buzzing with action. The busiest stations, according to Umvoti IEC Chris Naidoo were Enhlalakahle, Eshane and eThembisiwe.

Saturday was the quietest with only 2 682 visits spread over the 90 stations . The numbers picked up on Sunday with 7 252 voters being processed.

In terms of the Constutional Court ruling IEC has to have addresses for voters -deadline 1st June to comply with this.

It is reported that the majority of the nearly 10 000 voters were re-registration and address checks - not so many new voters and 18 year olds taking advantage of the fact that they can now vote.

According to Umvoti IEC there are 57 000 eligible voters in Umvoti , of which 38 000 are registered- it is estimated that the bulk of the 19 000 unregistered are the youth.

South Africa’s next general election takes place in 2019.
