AFTER 10 months of no council the Umzinyathi District Municipality elected Umvoti’s Petros Ngubane as its mayor at a special inauguration ceremony held last Tuesday.

Deputy Mayor is Ntombikayise Mdlalose of Nquthu and the Speaker is F.G. Sikhakane of Msinga.
Following the IFP’s landslide win in the recent Nquthu by-election the party now controls Nquthu, Endudemi, Msinga while  Umvoti falls under the ANC.   Control of three of the municipalities has given the IFP control of Umzinyathi District after five years of ANC rule.

In accepting the chain of office, Mayor Ngubane said there would be  forensic investigation to deal with all financial issues and a skills audit to ensure that personnel employed over the past five years were qualified for their positions.
Mayor Ngubane emphasised that this approach was “not revenge”, but a check to ensure that those employed by the Umzinyathi District Municipality were employed on merit and not nepotism.
