Unplug and save electricity

2019-03-27 06:01

I WORKED for Eskom more than 35 years and I know what is going on at the plant but I am not going to discuss that here. What I do want to say is that Eskom needs to keep the national grid frequency above 49 Mhertz to keep the grid stable.

Now, the main thing is that if every household can apply some discipline by just doing a few simple things, that will help the grid and even maybe reduce the load shedding times.

Put off all the lights around the outside of your house. Put off all the lights in the house when the rooms are not in use. Teach your family to put the lights off when they leave a room. Unplug all the chargers in the house if they are not charging any device because they are still consuming power when plugged in and the plug is in the on position. When you boil water for tea or whatever, only put enough water in for the amount of cups you want to make. A kettle draws 1.6 KW so the less water, the less power used.

Put your geyser off and only put it on an hour before bath time and off an hour after — it consumes 3KW every time the thermostat switches on and every time you open the water, cold goes in, the temperature drops and the geyser starts to heat up.

If each household can do this, Eskom has to produce less power.

Now, just some technical information — a normal house globe uses anything from 20 Watt to 100 Watt; well a 1 000 Watt is 1KW and a 1 000 KW is 1MW and a 1 000 MW is 1 GW. On average, our generating plants consume 0.6 kg of coal per KW and use 2.6l of water per KW. To give you an idea, one power station with six units generating 600 MW each consumes between 850 000 to 980 000 tons of coal and approximately 2 600ml of water and consumes approximately 83 GWH of its own power it generates to keep the station on load, so every KW saved is a blessing right now to Eskom.

Just think, if each house in Midstream can save 5KW, 5 000 homes is 25 000 KW, which equates to 25 MW.

I urge you to try and save where you can and pass my message on to family and friends throughout the country.

Dear fellow residents, what we can help with right now is going to help us through the winter period because if we can’t help Eskom then things are going to be worse this winter. As they say, many hands make light work so many savings keep the lights on.
