Update on Umvoti fire season

2017-09-27 06:01

THE Umvoti Fire Protection Association chief, Charles Haden, has issued the following press statement to the Greytown Gazette: “The current drought conditions that have affected the Umvoti district have kept the members of the Umvoti Fire Protection Association very busy attending to numerous call-outs.

“To date we have responded to 115 fires. The area burnt amounts to 843 ha. This is an increase of 33% as compared to 2016. There is a strong possibility that this figure could increase as we are still in the midst of the current fire season, which ends on 31 October, or when there is a dominant summer weather pattern in place.

“Our members are a unique group of farmers, and when called upon to respond to a call-out there is no hesitation in responding.

“We commend you all for your commitment and attitude and thank you for your prompt response, which has resulted in most of these fires to be contained very quickly with minimal losses.

“This past week, due to the extended period of hot and dry weather, was once again a very busy time for our members attending to 15 call-outs. We appeal to everyone to be extremely careful when handling fire as conditions are still conducive to runaway fires.”
