Water update - still a disaster area

2016-01-20 06:00

THE Umzinyathi District Municipality, which is the Umvoti water service provider, has issued the following statement on the still drastic water shortage:

“The drought situation in Greytown has not gotten better in the past couple of weeks. The area is still classified a disaster area, with Lake Merthley at only 19%.

“The recent rains are welcomed, but are yet to make a big impact on the situation.

“Umzinyathi District Municipality still urges all Greytown residents and those of surrounding towns to use water sparingly and efficiently.

“The current water shedding schedule is still very much in effect, and residents are urged to keep this in mind when planning their daily tasks. When schools opened on 13 January, the schedule was amended to accommodate the busy period - to open at 4am and close at 9am, after which water is supplied by JoJo tanks.

“Communities are also urged to keep an eye on children who go swimming in the Greytown Waste Treatment Works sites at Solomon Mzolo township because these areas have been condoned off and swimming is not permitted at all there.

“Water is life, please use it sparingly and wisely.”
