Wembley College Premier League launched

2017-12-06 06:00

WEMBLEY College recently launched its premier league, an eight-a-side hockey tournament to be hosted at Wembley College on February 24, 2018.

The tournament is based on an IPL-style auction format, where the team owners bid for players as they are released for purchase.

Ten companies are participating in the inaugural tournament and all funds raised will be used for sport development at Wembley College.

The 10 team-owning companies have been battling it out to purchase their own dream team, with intense competition at the auctions held thus far.

The first auction of “Marquee” players was held between October 9 and 12, with two players being released and auctioned each evening.

The second auction of “A-List Players” was held on November 1. In a companionable, but competitive atmosphere, the companies took each other on, to secure the best of the available players. The third auction was held on November 15.

The top players from Wembley College, including representative from Umzinyathi, Midlands, Inland and country-districts teams were fought over by intensely competitive bidders.

The last auction for the year was held on November 29 where a third round of players was auctioned off. Again this event was a heated affair with companies vouching for some top SA and local players.

South African, indoor hockey, world cup representative in 2015, Matt Coombes was auctioned along with Andrew Manson, a member of the South African extended squad, who plays for the Addo Elephants in the SA national PHL tournament.

We would like to thank Plennegy, Mascor, Engen, Bracken, Rhino Charcoal, Home Lacey, Umvoti Fuel and Oil, Umvoti Tyres, John Deere and Pidelta for their support.
