THE Wembley College embarked on a very exciting campaign this year to promote sun safety among our pupils.

Research shows that parents and schools can make a difference in reducing children’s lifetime cancer risk and the Be Sun Smart School programme is aimed to do just that.

The dangers of sun exposure for children are becoming an increasing concern for parents and schools alike. Children are at school when UV radiation levels are at their peak.

We, as a school, are uniquely placed to keep your children protected from the sun during their school day and teach them healthy sun safety habits. Therefore, we will endeavour to encourage children to apply sunscreen before going out to break, and help form healthy sun habits. By making sunscreen readily available in classrooms and at the sports fields, children are more likely to use it, thus helping to combat sun-induced skin damage.

This campaign was developed in collaboration with Nivea Sun in partnership with SunSavvy and endorsed by the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). Each classroom, change-room and toilet in the school has a sunscreen station where scholars can freely apply sunblock. While some parents may already be applying sunscreen in the mornings, sunscreen does need to be reapplied during the day. As a Be Sun Smart school, we’ll further benefit through the educational programme offered, which teaches children to be sun smart. — Supplied.
