A 17-YEAR-OLD model Syabonga Mpontshane, from Wembley, will be jetting off to New York to attend the International Arts Talent Showcase that will be held on July 7.

Syabonga was selected for the competition at auditions held in Durban and Johannesburg in October last year.

The Grade 11 pupil at Kearsney College, who started modelling at primary school, said he is very excited, especially because this will be his first time travelling out of the country. “I hope this is the first of many other international trips,” he said.

“I think that my story shows that you can be ordinary but still be capable of doing great things. It all starts with a dream and believing in your dream then everything is possible.

“The fact that this modelling industry is dominated by women made me want to push harder to show that that is just a stereotype and hopefully pave a way for other young aspiring male models,” he said.

Syabonga said he wants to study IT and photography after matric but also carry on with modelling.

His mother, Sibongile Mthembu, said she is very proud of her son and she hopes this will help her son get exposure.

“When I asked him to join modelling when he was still in primary school I just wanted him to gain confidence; I never thought that he would go this far with it. This is his chance to pursue a career doing something that he loves. I am happy and supportive of his decisions.I encourage other parents to support their children’s dreams,” she said.

Mthembu said she wants other people to know that there are such platforms available for youngsters. Mthembu will be travelling to the competition alongside her son.
