WEMBLEY PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY

• What is Wembley Premier League Hockey?

The Wembley Premier League tournament is a once off hockey event happening on Saturday February 24. It is similar to the IPL in cricket where various companies have to battle it out to bid on players to build their own dream team.

• How was this idea conceptualised?

This idea ignited during a discussion with John and Jack Yeadon about how to expand our Wembley College Summer League. The concept is to make things more exciting with an auction format where players are brought.

• How did you get companies involved?

Greytown’s community is extremely supportive towards Wembley. I decided to approach the companies that take part in our summer league as they know the players.

• What does the auction process entail?

The four auctions to date have been hosted by Cameron van Schalkwyk who creates a vibe. Player by player, we auction off players and managers have to outbid each other in order to secure the signing of a player.

• How are the players selected for the auction?

We opened up the entries to all the summer league players and we have approached provincial and national players to add more value to the tournament.

• What has been the best part of the auction process?

The great success has been in reaching our fundraising target.

• Is the premier league going to be a regular occurrence?

We are currently hoping to have the premier league once a year. This needs to be a prestigious event which companies want to be a part of it.

• What can we expect to see on February 24?

Everyone can expect a great afternoon of hockey where families can enjoy the festivities. It will be one of the highlights of 2018 Wembley calendar.

• How is this helping Wembley School and its pupils?

Each company is required to have at least two pupils representing their team. The summer league has benefitted pupils giving them a chance to play with some phenomenal players. - Lousie Yeadon
