A REGULAR household refuse collection service for town residents allows no excuse for the mindless and socially repugnant practice of dumping bags of household litter along rural roads.

Dumping of household rubbish is a regular occurrence in plantations and along rural roads on the periphery of Greytown. Refuse disposed of in this way attracts the attention of feral dogs, monkeys and other animals that rip open the bags to scavenge whatever may be inside.

Frequently these bags of litter contain used disposable nappies which end up spread all over the area, fouling nearby water sources, causing an unbearable stench as well as spreading harmful bacteria.

While a certain misguided opinion prevails, that littering is acceptable because it creates employment, the question must be posed: “Is it acceptable or fair for someone else to have the indignity and hazardous task of picking up someone else’s rotting rubbish?”

Last week, a socially irresponsible person saw fit to dump bags of household refuse 50 metres from the turn-off onto the Mooi River Road.

Among the stinking, vile mess of rotting food, soiled disposable nappies and a pre-school child’s art were polystyrene food containers marked with the name “Minnie”.

The Umvoti municipal waste department must be commended on its prompt response to this reported littering incident.
