FOR the past two weeks Form 2 to Form 5 pupils have been carrying out an experiment to see what types, and how many microbes they can find around every-day items.

Using a nutrient agar and, anything they find, they have been exploring the school, their homes and even shopping malls to find things that we interact with every day and to see how many and what kinds of microbes are growing on these surfaces.

After the Form 5s cultured the bacteria and fungi, they took their petri dishes to the lab and examined their microbes under a microscope. This revealed some fascinating fungi and bacteria, while the Form 2s had to do bacterial counts and colony analysis. The Form 3s and 4s are about to attempt to do gram staining to determine the type of cell walls that their microbes have.

Last Thursday the Foundation Phase children had a fun-filled morning on the sports field. The first half of the programme was the traditional flat races between the Falcons and the Eagles. The final score was Eagles 92, Falcons 112. Congratulations to the Eagles for winning the spirit trophy, and to the Falcons for their victory.

After tea and refreshments, the field became an Olympic arena and boasted events like Dizzy Dribbling, Happy Hurdles, Jolly Javelin, Lucky Long Jump and many more. Children competed in small groups, showing off their special skills under supervision of parents, grandparents and teachers. Thanks to all who contributed to this enjoyable morning

In terms of sport, Sarah Barber attended a cricket training camp for the KZN U19 ladies' cricket squad on 13-14 August.

The second training camp will be held in a month's time to compare the results from the previous camp.

This will help the coaches pick a final team.
