WE at Wembley would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Link Seed for their generous sponsorship of the Penny Heyns swimming clinic that was hosted by Wembley College from 11-12 January.

This event was very inspirational with 42 of Wembley’s swimmers and five of the swimming coaches having the privilege of receiving personal coaching and advice from one of South Africa’s most successful swimmers.

As an international swimmer, Penny Heyns established herself as the world’s greatest female breaststroker of the 20th century by becoming the only woman in Olympic history to win both the 100 metre and 200 metre breaststroke events in Atlanta in 1996, bronze in Sydney in 2000 and by breaking a total of 14 individual world records during her career.
She became the only swimmer in history to hold five of the possible six breast stroke world records as well as the only swimmer to ever hold world records in three possible distances - the 50m, 100m as well as the 200m.

Penny was accompanied by her business partner Zelda van Vuuren, who was Penny’s manager during her career. Zelda is responsible for the booking of the clinics as well as all the work behind the scenes.

At the clinic Penny gave a generous amount of feedback to each individual as she attended to all the swimming strokes, starts and turns. Her presentations inspired swimmers and coaches to believe in their own potential, showed them how to turn disappointment into victory and, most importantly, live a life in pursuit of personal excellence.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to Greg and Ronel Barber for their contribution towards accommodating Penny and Zelda as well as Mrs Maroné Lötter and Mascor for sponsoring a printed photo with Penny for each swimmer.

Furthermore, in the last week of November, the matric Class of 2016 went on the MSC Sinfonia to celebrate the end of their school career at Wembley College. Nine of the matrics went on the cruise to Maputo and the Portuguese Islands. We all had a lovely time on the boat, enjoying the wide variety of cuisine served each day, meeting new people from all around the world and taking part in all the activities offered on the boat.

The highlight of the trip was the Wednesday on the island where we enjoyed pristine beaches that stretched as far as the eye could see, a braai on the beach while cooling down with coconut cups, surfing and being part of all the water sports that were on offer.

Lastly, we would like to welcome the following pupils to the Wembley family:

Wombles: Wikus Breytenbach, Felix Crowe, Matthew Goble, Kyle Hohls, Saima Kharodia, Zakhanya Phungula.

Grade RRR: Nadia Bagus, Ross Carroll, Emihle Dladla, Lifeziwe Dladla, Righardt Kinghorn, Rishab Kirpal and Zilugile Mkhandla.
