What a great start to the midterm break! At our JP Fun Gala, the grades R-3 children each received a participation medal and marched around the pool to Stand up for the Champions.

We were thankful for the good swimming weather. We would like to offer a special word of thanks to Gareth Larkan, Irene Allen as well as Ronel Barber for their contributions.

The heroes of the day were definitely the parents who swam the 25m relay with the children.

The HS cricket players had the opportunity to go on tour to Northern Cape High School during the midterm break.

This was an extremely challenging time on the field for the Wembley players as they had to play against a school who traditionally play against the best medium-sized schools across the country.

The players had to persevere in the extreme Kimberley heat. They played longer matches than they are used to as we have, for a very long time, only been exposed to T20 matches.

On Friday both teams played a thirty over match followed by a time game on Saturday.

In the time game the teams are able to bat and field for two innings depending on the team who scored the most runs.

This means that our players played a full day’s cricket, which was a milestone for us as it takes a vast amount of concentration to be on the field for that amount of time.

The final match scheduled on the Sunday was a T20, but it was rained out shortly after the start.

Even though we lost all the matches, it was a truly character-building experience where players were able to build a very special team spirit.

We also had the privilege to visit the Big Hole which proved very educational and interesting as players toured around in the upper mine shaft as well as the small corrugated mining town which illustrated the life of a diamond miner, 140 years ago.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Northern Cape staff for the way in which they hosted us as well as the coaches for sharing a huge amount of knowledge with the Wembley players and coaches.

This gives us something to work towards.

On Wednesday 22 February nine lucky scholars who where selected departed from Wembley with much enthusiasm.

We headed to Athlone Primary School to take part in the 2017 KLQ.

The Kids’ Lit Quiz is a major international literature competition where teams of four students work together to answer wide-ranging literary questions.

Students collaboratively answer 100 questions arranged in ten categories (The categories are unknown to contestants prior to the event).

They day proved to be filled with excitement.

The scholars enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to the 2018 KLQ. Thank you to all our contestants
