ON Saturday, 25 February, Mascor hosted the annual Cansa Shavathon.

The Form 5 class chose this as their outreach project for the year. Pupils ars helped with the registration and the spraying of hair. A total of 128 people either donated, sprayed or shaved their hair. Five cut off their ponies which will go towards making wigs.

A total of R8 000 was collected and will be donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa. Thank you to Reverend Rudolph Scharneck from the Dutch Reformed Church, for giving us the opportunity to be part of this wonderful event.

The Grade 1 pupils had a wonderful experience on Friday, 24 February, when some of their dads came to tell us about their careers.

Ivan’s dad, Uncle Mel Adendorff, told us how important it is to know how to count. He also told us about selling houses and being an auctioneer. Medha’s dad, Uncle Vishay Aheer, told us about being a doctor. He also showed us a few of his instruments.

Lizé’s dad, Uncle Jean Pretorius, came to tell us about being a chicken farmer. We were thrilled when he opened his box and got out a few day-old chicks for us to hold. Uncle Greg Barber, a dairy farmer, explained that he milks the cows from 4am to 7am.

He sells the milk to dairies in Johannesburg and they make cheese, yoghurt and ice cream.

Wembley College thanks Mrs Dot Corbishley for her sponsorship of mini tennis nets, racquets and balls. This equipment will be used by the JP phase as we aim to build an interest in tennis from a young age. We appreciate you Mrs Corbishley, as well as everything you do for our pupils.

We would like to congratulate Calista Muna who has been selected for the Midlands U15 girls’ tennis team. She has been selected as the number one tennis player in the U15 age group.

Lastly, Wembley College combined with Hermannsburg and Wartburg to make up an Umvoti swimming team who competed at the Co-ed Gala on 28 February 2017, in the UKZN pool.

Wembley had the largest contingent of swimmers in the Umvoti team and swam against five schools that fielded some very talented swimmers. The Umvoti team finished third with the points for the top teams being very close.

Wembley is proud of the following swimmers who won age group awards:

Ludwig Herbst: U14 Victor ludorum

Luke Porée: U15 Victor ludorum.
