A REPORT written by Robin Adendorff, on behalf of the Dalton WI in January for the WI Federation magazine had interesting and positive results for Izigane Zethu - the project operated through Letcee in Greytown to help children bringing them hope, education, nourishment, safety where previously they had nothing.
This project started several years ago when Mary James of Letcee noticed how many children in the lower part of town were standing around with nothing to do “looking forlorn, cold and hungry”, many of whom were locked out of their home during the day while their parents were at work or out.
Starting off with just a shipping container the Letcee touch promoted, developed, and through local and overseas financial help, now takes care of feeding, clothing, school homework, and more, for several hundred youngsters from toddlers up.
Because of Mary James's close links with the Women's Institute movement through her mother, Ione Pepper, Mrs Adendorff wrote about Mary, her WI links and the wonderful work being carried out at Izigane Zethu.

The report on this activity impressed the Zululand WI, and in particular Hazel Butcher, the FWI public relations officer, who is also a recycling expert.

Together with members, and a grant from Norway for this project, it was a happy day for the children at Izigane Zethu as boxes of goodies were unpacked as well as a a new tricycle and pull-along wagon.

Greytown WI now meets with Dalton WI this amazing organisation continues to flourish. Throughout the years thousands of women have learnt many skills through their WI membership and the range of their interests and activities continues to grow in the different communities.
