WORLD Eye Care Awareness Month began on 19 September and runs until 16 October and Greytown Hospital Eye Clinic visited the Child and Youth Care Centre to offer its services.

In a recent study issued by South African National Council for the Blind it was found that 80% of blindness can be prevented. A significant preventative measure is ensuring that eyes are regularly tested, increasingly so as one ages.

People over the age of 40 need to test their eyes every three to five years.

Those who are over 60 need to do so annually because the elderly have a higher chance of suffering damage to the eyes, resulting in conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts

The centre was very appreciative of the free eye screening undertaken by the Greytown Hospital eye clinic personnel Hospital Mr Sbu Skhakhane and Ms Rhulani Nkuna whose efforts will make a big difference in the lives of the 40 children who were tested.
