UMVOTI Municipality has launched a “Let's Keep Umvoti Clean” campaign, however, unless something is done immediately about waste removal, the campaign is a waste of time and money.

This photograph was taken at the Greytown rubbish dump site on Monday.

Six of the containers used to transport Greytown's rubbish to Pietermaritzburg are standing there.

Both vehicles used by the municipality to transport local rubbish over 80 kms (and back) to a Pietermaritzburg waste disposal site, at vast cost, are out of action and un- til repaired, the waste remains here.

Of even greater concern is the health hazard for the municipal workers, unmasked and ungloved, who breath in and work with the toxic waste.

Over the past few months, members of the public have been seen also unmasked and ungloved, digging into the piles of waste in hope of finding some scrap which they can sell ... or use, layers of moist smelly rubbish, ungloved and unmasked.

Workers in the area told the Greytown Gazette that mosquitoes, flies and rats were a serious and constant problem and not only does the “dump smell — it stinks”.

Mystery surrounds the development of Greytown's own landfill — its identified on the outskirts of the town on the Kranskop road.

Years ago the site was prepared with the trees cut down — Umzinyathi District
Municipality half-heartedly began the project.

But -do the two Muicipalities communicate? The following statement on the landfill site from Umzinyathi last year “Umzinyathi in partnership with the Department of Environmental Affairs is developing the Umvoti Landfill

Site. Progress to date currently finalising the rezoning application for Umvoti Landfill site to be approved by the Joint Municipal committee by end of June 2017 and the landfill site should be operating in the new financial Municipal year.!”
