VARIOUS community representatives, youth, and members of Ikusasa neMbokodo held a fun walk and awareness campaign at Ntembisweni recently. The aim of the event was to devise strategic plans to alleviate social problems in the community.

Imfundoyethu Foundation secretary Zinhle Shange said members of Ikusasa neMbokodo launched the programme, which also aimed to address and raise awareness about women abuse.

“The day culminated with various educational programmes aimed at educating the youth about the significance of June 16.

“The youth pledged to deviate from bad habits and stay away from drugs and alcohol.

“The members of Ikusasa neMbokodo want the programme to reach out to other areas within the Umvoti area. We believe that such programmes will have a positive impact on the children.”

Cebisile Xulu, secretary of Ikusasa neMbokodo, said the aim of their forum is to groom young girls and raise awareness about women abuse in the community.

“We had a Youth Day event and called all girls from Grade 6 to Grade 9 to attend. We started off with a 5km fun walk at Ntembisweni Primary and did aerobics.

“Various speakers told the youth about the importance of commemorating June 16 and the history of this historic day and then we split the children into groups to talk about issues such as teenage pregnancy and sexual abuse.”

Xoli Ngcobo said: “I am proud to have been part of the fun walk organised by Ikusasa neMbokoko.

I learnt a lot and wish this programme could reach other areas.”
