SHARED faith in God is what has kept Elizabeth and Arthur Bartholomew married for 49 years and still in love as if they are newly weds.

The duo married in 1969 on October 11, and said they have come across obstacles in their way but these have never lessened their love for one another.

The couple gave an insight into what has kept them going for so long and how their love for each other has never faded, but instead has grown even more. “Promises are made to be kept,” she said. The couple said they made a promise when they got married that they would never leave each other and that’s what has kept them committed to one another.

“There was a time when I was diagnosed with cancer and I felt as if I was not beautiful. I lost my hair and I had to always cover my head as I felt ugly. One morning when I woke up, I found my husband looking at me and I was startled by that. He just told me how beautiful I was and how much he loved me,” said Elizabeth.

“There was never a time that he missed any of my appointments and that made our love grow even stronger. I was only 46 years of age and now I’m going to turn 69,” said Elizabeth.

When Arthur asked what he is going to do for his wife this Valentine’s Day, he said he’s going to do what he did last year. “I’m going to love her more,” said Arthur.

The couple said the reason relationships in the 21st century don’t work is that they are superficial. “Everything happens socially and they don’t value each other’s feelings. They don’t have shared interest, good principles and standards, which are very important in every relationship,” said Elizabeth.

They said compatibility, commitment and similar tastes have played a huge role in their journey. “We are compatible with each other because we like the same things. We will go to different furniture shops and we’ll come back and find out that we loved the same things but we went to two different places,” said Elizabeth.

The couple wished all Hillcrest Fever readers a happy Valentine’s Day.
