Congratulations to Trevor Noah

2015-10-06 06:00

AS South Africans celebrate Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show debut, few consider what this entails for the immigration debate and globalisation.

He is a foreigner, a relative newcomer to the U.S. and mostly unknown. He is also not white (the U.S.’s majority racial group). Still, all these odds could not hold him down.

It is ironic that Noah has become a beneficiary of 21st century globalisation and progressive thinking in a foreign country, while the word “foreigner” calls up an almost negative connotation in his home country. Noah is where he is because talent was allowed to flourish.

His experience is not new to the U.S.; they have a black president who is the son of an African immigrant, and who can forget former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his heavy Austrian accent?

Maybe it is unfair to compare the U.S. and South Africa, but many African leaders finger the West as the architect of Africa’s and the world’s problems.

South Africa’s foreign policy is increasingly anti-Western and pro-Eastern.

Perhaps it is true that the West invented diseases and shipped them to Africa, maybe the Americans are evil capitalists and war mongers, but one thing they do well and which we should learn is to give talent and skills free reign, irrespective of who owns it.

Congratulations to Noah for his hunger and success, and for not confining himself to his homeland. Opportunity knows no boundaries.
