THE Kwa-Ximba Conservancy was formed in 2013 as a result of Simon Maphumulo’s passion for the environment.

Maphumulo, who also trains people on the eradication of invasive alien plants, approached Kloof Conservancy for assistance in establishing a conservancy in Kwa-Ximba. Following a series of workshops, a group of residents with an interest in environmental issues, formally constituted the conservancy, which was subsequently registered with the KZN Conservancies Association and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

The conservancy has been involved in a number of environmental initiatives and held a “green day” at Nofimvela Primary. This was followed by an international museum day celebration held in conjunction with the Durban Natural Science Museum.

The conservancy also initiated the Kwa-Ximba Trail Run as a fund raiser. The next race is scheduled for 25 October.

The conservancy also hosted a Bio-Blitz by a team from the Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers during which rare plants in the area were recorded.

Due to the difficult socio-economic situation of most residents it is difficult to motivate care for the environment when many residents are struggling to cope with daily life, but the conservancy team is committed to making a difference.

The conservancy is involved in anti-litter and educational campaigns at Kwa-Ximba schools, but the biggest challenge is to set-up a “stewardship programme” for the area which will include the long-term goal of setting aside land for a nature reserve. - Supplied
