SOUTH Africa Community Action Network (SA Can), which is fast becoming the Upper Highway community’s crime-fighting and empowerment unit, took its role to another level when they rescued a cow that fell down a cliff in Drummond recently.

SA Can’s Andreas Mathios said when the herder saw the cow had fallen, he called the farm owner who then contacted SA Can.

“The cow had lost her footing on a path while on her way to graze, and was hanging off a cliff above a dry earth dam,” he said.

“When she fell, she landed on her hindquarters and, because she was dazed and perhaps winded, she couldn’t move,” said Mathios.

A veterinarian came out and assessed the situation and found that because she had been sitting on her hindquarters for a good few hours, she had become lame and suggested that it would be better to leave her overnight.

“She had to be rolled over every three hours during the night and there were a team of people from the farming community who sat and rolled her over every three hours,” said Mathios.

“The community really came together to help.”

The cow was eventually rescued with the assistance of many community members and a vet was on hand to assist the animal.

She sustained no severe injuries and only a few abrasions. The cow and her calf were happily reunited and she is on her way to recovery. - Supplied
