Excellent teachers are sidelined

2015-06-02 06:00

THE denial by the provincial Department of Education with regard to the corruption and selling of promotion posts, inter alia newly qualified teachers battling to get appointments, is nothing but a face-saving exercise.

A glance into the department will reveal that it is overflowing with Sadtu people, the schools are full of Sadtu management personnel and sadly, excellent teachers with decades of indisputable classroom expertise are not promoted,. The broader teaching communities know they are sidelined. They must be applauded, for these strong teachers will not sell their souls and compromise their values.

Those whose hands are stained have no conscience — our children in the foundation phase cannot read in English.

The hand-picked fledgling teachers in many instances have connections in Sadtu. A few years ago, the appointment of a principal at a secondary school in the northern areas was allegedly tainted —the best candidate was played down by the prejudiced governing body and influential Sadtu officials inside the department.

Appreciated teachers are scheduled to resign at the end of 2015 and already the cabals and architects are polishing apples with the corrupt to get family members to fill vacancies, annoyingly ahead of very capable women teachers. Male dominance in our schools must be substituted with able women.
