HILLCREST resident Hlalazi Shezi (Bheki) may not train at a fancy gym with state-of-the-art facilities, but through determination he has achieved just as much as any other successful athlete.

Speaking to the Fever about his latest achievement, the 30-year-old father of one from Embo says he was placed 55 and obtained a silver medal at the Comrades Marathon last week.

Shezi, who works as a car guard at the Pot and Kettle, said it was always his dream to take on this endurance challenge.

He said that as a child he used to wake up an hour before the race started just to watch the athletes take off from the starting line.

“I used to admire the endurance the racers had and always told my parents that some day it will be me,” he said.

Some 20 years later, Shezi achieved this goal and said that he achieved it with his best time of six hours and 36 minutes. He said that his motivation throughout the race was his child.

“Although the up run was a difficult one, I had to give it my all. I wanted to show my son that if you put your mind to something, you can achieve it,” he said.

Shezi added that his biggest motivation is the support structure he has at home and work.

“I also take a great deal of motivation by improving myself with every race I take part in. I also joined the Hillcrest Villagers Athletic Club which constantly encourages me to do my best.”

Shezi said that his next goal is to obtain permanent employment.

“After I matriculated I could not afford to study and the only option I had was to be a car guard to earn a living and support my family,” he said.

“My dream is to get a permanent job. I am a self motivated individual and a very hard worker. If given the opportunity I am sure I can be an asset to any company. If anyone can assist me with a job I would be very grateful.”
