GORGEOUS, hot conditions greeted more than 130 runners as the Spur KZN Trail Series® kicked off at Inanda Dam last Sunday. Both courses experienced some magnificent flowing single track along the banks of the Inanda Dam with nature and views making the searing heat worthwhile. In the men’s 8.9km long-course championship race, it was a bare-footed Inanda Dam runner who proved local knowledge is king. Mbhasobhle Gumede blitzed his way to first place in a time of 34:01 while Zee Mkhize showed her prowess for the trails by claiming the overall ladies prize in a time of 44:14. The 4.5km short-course challenge highlighted the future potential in the KZN trail-running community as six out of the top 10 were under the age of 17, with the times posted outrageous. In the men’s race, Savages Club member, Sakhiwo Manguzela took top honours as he whipped his way around the course in a time of 15:42. Silindilo Buhle was the first lady across the line in a time of 20:19 to register ninth place overall. It was an electric start to what promises to be a fantastic series and we can’t wait to make our way to Giba Gorge this Wednesday for the second race in the series and the first night race. Thanks to the sponsors who make this all possible - Spur Steak Ranches, BOS Ice Tea, Protea Hotels and Graham Beck. - Supplied
