“GREAT leaders don’t set out to be a leader….they set out to make a difference,” this is the way the Kloof and Highway SPCA family feels about its manager Barbara Patrick who celebrates seven years at the society this month.

Speaking to the Fever about how she joined the SPCA, Patrick said that she had resigned from her job in the corporate world to take a break and study and enjoy some time off for seven months.

“I knew that I wanted to do something completely different from what I had been doing. I spoke to a friend about positions available at her recruitment agency and she suggested that I come and chat to her. After two hours of talking to me about what I didn’t want in a job, she looked at me and said we have the perfect job for you and here I am seven years later at our amazing SPCA,” she said with a smile.

Describing herself as compassionate, Patrick said that there are so many great moments that she has been a part of at the SPCA.

“There are so many memorable moments for me at the SPCA and for me every day I can assure you it’s never a dull day! One of my most memorable moments was when I was told in my last interview for the position as SPCA manager that I had got the job. I was trying my best to stay composed and I was asked if I had any questions and I replied; Yes, what should I wear to work?”

She went on to add, “Every time we have achieved one of our dreams on our wish list has been a ‘memorable moment’, to name a few, the opening of our new puppy run, the upgrading of our cattery, the introduction of dog walkers and cat socialiser volunteers, our outreach clinics, inviting our community to be a part of our SPCA family, being able to save animals from further abuse and cruelty, building our 24 socialisation runs, opening our first thrift shop.”

Patrick’s message to the youth is to believe in themselves, work hard and be honest.

“Remember that you can achieve anything that you set out to do….just do it! If together we all make a difference everyday our world will be fabulous! Laugh and have fun.”

Lisa Gadd the SPCA’s outreach officer said, “Our SPCA has been lead to make such a huge transformation by a deeply passionate, kind-hearted, compassionate and highly motivated Manager. We salute you Barbara Patrick on being an incredible visionary for our SPCA and for making a huge difference in the lives of so many animals,” she said.

“Thank-you for being our leader and guiding our SPCA. Your leadership has been our inspiration every day.”
