HILLCREST and Kloof Wards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints co-ordinated a “Mormon Helping Hands” project which resulted in major improvements in the Esibusisweni Crèche andamp; Orphanage.

Sister Shelley Viljoen of the Hillcrest Ward was the driving force in the accomplishment of this project.

Through partnering efforts with church members and the South African Defence Force a new kitchen was installed with a sink, cupboards and counter-tops.

In addition a bathtub and toilet were installed, broken windows were replaced, the roof was water-proofed, the interior and exterior of the house and crèche were painted, the veranda was tiled, the bathroom was tiled and a vegetable garden was expanded, fenced and planted.

Materials were obtained through the generous donations of several local sponsors. The labour was provided by 168 church members and 38 non-members who donated a total of 1015 hours of their time over a two-month period to accomplish this project.

“Gratitude and appreciation was extended to the following sponsors whose generosity enabled the great success of the project - Build it, NMC Group, Gibson Plant Hire, GN Plant Hire, Mr Board, SonaeNovo Board, Kusasa Paints, AM Builders, Gelmar, Bradys and Franke,” said Viljoen.

Busisiwe Dlamini lives in the house with her family and 12 orphans to whom she has opened her heart and her home. “She operates a small day-care centre during the week to help community residents who work during the day. “She uses the small amount of income she receives from day-care to provide care for her family and orphans,” said Viljoen.

“Mormon Helping Hands is an ongoing programme of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that has been established to give members and non-members opportunities to give their time and talents to bless the lives of those less fortunate. “Church members endeavour to follow the example of Jesus Christ in these charitable efforts.”
