Oxford set to become a family lifestyle village

2015-09-22 06:00

DEVELOPMENTS at Oxford Village, on the site of the former Hillcrest Heritage Market, are transforming the shopping centre into a family lifestyle Village.

Brett Latimer, owner, said: “There are no parks or beaches in Hillcrest, so it is our aim to provide families with a dynamic shopping, sporting and entertainment destination, set in beautiful, tranquil surrounds where they can enjoy a range of facilities and activities in a safe environment.”

“We are catching storm, roof and rainwater to build two new dams and create a man-made wetland, which is attracting birds and wild buck.”

The new-look Oxford Village moves away from the former ‘flea-market’ type of aesthetic, to a new contemporary design, with 800 new parking bays and improved vehicle and pedestrian circulation.

The 3 200 square metre Oxford Fresh Market store is the anchor tenant, with a world-class butchery, an extensive fruit and vegetable market, bakery, deli and vast grocery hall.

Cookery demonstrations and gourmet classes run by leading chefs form part of the vast Oxford Village entertainment plan. Plans are afoot for regular weekend family entertainment at the Oxford Village Theatre, formerly the Heritage Theatre,

Dining options include Pallet Jacks, The Keg and Red Black Sports Café.

“Our commitment to up-cycling is evident at Pallet Jacks restaurant, where the décor is crafted from re-cycled wooden pallets,” said Mr Latimer.

“Skills transfer is also top of mind in our intensive staff training programmes.”

Apart from dining and retail therapy, The Red Black Sports Café is fast becoming a popular meeting spot for trendy locals, whist the adjacent multi-functional, flood-lit Sports Arena is a popular attraction for students and fathers.

The Sports Arena, with international level astro turf, is designed for 5-a-side soccer and has an American-style single hoop 3-a-side basketball court with a state of the art composite surface.

The Sports Arena is available for children’s birthday parties or local leagues.

The Bike Park, which is set on the lower level, is attracting attention from a variety of sportsmen and hardcore leading sports brands.

The recently installed multi-functional composite pump track, which is one of only two in South Africa and the only permanent one in the country, opens officially on 26 September, with demonstrations from top athletes – all day, between 10am and 5pm (9 Old Main Road, Hillcrest).

The launch promises plenty of excitement with ‘Pump Wars,’ which will be a competition gathering amateur and pro riders in biking, skateboarding and scooter divisions.

The pump track, which is designed for mountain bikes, BMX’s, roller blades and scooters, provides a platform for cycling enthusiasts and professionals to compete on an international level as it is linked via the internet to a ‘World Cup Series.’

The Bike Park’s ‘Multi-Trax’ facilities also include a 3-kilometre dirt track for runnning, walking or cycling ….. providing an unexpected natural outdoor experience, right in the heart of Hillcrest.
