A TEAM of talented para-dressage riders will be heading off to the 2015 SA Para Dressage Championships at Kyalami Equestrian Park from 23 to 27 September and are looking for sponsors.

Participation at this event is compulsory in order to score points for selection to the national team that will compete in a national qualifying competition in Europe in October and thereafter will represent South Africa at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

However, for the five talented, passionate, physically disabled individuals who have demonstrated qualifying potential, finance remains their biggest challenge.

Maudelene Frenzel, one of the mothers involved with the team said that in order to participate at the SA championships in Gauteng, the riders would select, train and ride on borrowed horses and would spend two weeks - 16-28 September - away from home with their support team consisting of an assistant and a groom.

She said costs total over R80 000 and they are looking for individuals or companies to assist with regard to finance.

“As a social awareness campaign the disabled riders will try to encourage other disabled people to participate in horse riding on a therapeutic and/or competitive basis. “The team will visit homes for the disabled to motivate and encourage them to get involved in any kind of para sport.”

“I am appealing for sponsorship for these riders and their support team to participate in the 2015 SA Para Dressage Championships, as per the above budget, and possibly for international participation in Europe in October.”
