PINETOWN resident Nokubonga Mbambo, also known as Philile, is a designer for a women’s clothing label, Tymles Creations, and is one of the 2015 Fashion mentors who took part in the Next Generation Show.

Philile studied through the Lindiwe Khuzwayo Academy of Fashion Design and says she chose a career in this industry because of her passion for creating garments.

She describes her style as fun, playful, quirky and bright. "My garments are full of fun. I draw inspiration from my surroundings and believe that my work reflects my personal fashion taste. I am my brand."

Improving her pattern-making skills through the workshops, Philile said her label was recognised at the Durban Fashion Fair which recently took place at the Suncoast Casino.

Philile was one of 10 designers who left for Italy last month on a two-month internship that will introduce them to the international fashion world.

Business Support Tourism and Markets Unit programme manager, Sindi Shangase, who has driven this event from the beginning, admits that she finds it hard to hide her excitement as each year the field of young designers who have sharpened their skills and broadened their horizons as part of this innovative programme has grown.

She said that this opportunity capacitates and empowers young designers while encouraging the culture of entrepreneurship in the Durban fashion industry.

“It facilitates access to new markets and networking opportunities. While in Milan these young Durban designers receive intense fashion lessons, visit fashion- related venues and hubs, attend Milan Fashion Week as well as receive work experience in various fashion houses.
