Rapist duo get life for ‘shocking act’

2015-06-16 06:00

TWO MEN were sentenced to life imprisonment each for multiple rapes of an 18-year-old woman in the Hillcrest area last week.

The victim was accosted by the two while she was walking in the KwaNyuswa area with her boyfriend on 19 April, 2014.

The couple was forced into the bushes next to the road, after which the young woman was raped repeatedly.

The names of the couple have been withheld in order to protect the identity of the victim. Passing sentence on the young rapists yesterday Judge Yvonne Mbatha said the prevalence of such offences in our society is “shocking”.

Sicebi Ndlovu (19), who was a pupil at the time, was found guilty of seven counts of rape, and Sanele Ngcobo (22) of five counts of rape.

Ndlovu was also found guilty of theft of a cellphone for which he was sentenced to an additional 12 months imprisonment.

The judge ordered the latter sentence to run concurrently with the life sentence for rape.

The judge said in her view, despite arguments made by the defence to the contrary, that the youthfulness of the accused and the other factors were not enough to tip the scales in their favour having regard to [the lightening of] the gravity of the case
