THE Kloof and Highway SPCA hosted its first outreach clinic of the year in the KwaMbhedula area in Mariannhill recently.

The aim of the clinics is to reach out to the most vulnerable animals in poverty stricken areas and provide primary health care, thus promoting the health and welfare of animals and people.

During the three-day clinic 179 animals were sterilised by two veterinarians, vaccinated and treated for ticks, fleas and other external parasites. Sixty nine unwanted animals were signed over by their owners into the care of the SPCA, sparing them from a life of neglect and suffering. Inspectors visited community homes to educate them about basic animal health care and how to look after their pets. Education within a community is important as often a lack of education is responsible for cruelty to animals and this can be changed through educating pet owners about responsible pet ownership.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA thank you - its donors -sponsors and volunteers who make these clinics possible.

“Without our supporters’ generosity the Kloof and Highway SPCA would not be able to continue the important work we do for animal welfare within our community,” said Lisa Gadd the SPCA PR and outreach officer.
