Service witha sneerthese days

2015-07-14 06:00

ONCE upon a time, service providers clung to the rosy notion that the customer was always right, even when the miserable son-of-a-gun was clearly in the wrong.

In today’s dog-eat-dog world, customers are frequently tolerated as a necessary evil, without whom the wheels of commerce would grind to a halt.

Nowhere is this more clearly demonstrated than when contacting a service provider with whom you wish to explore the possibility of doing business.

With misplaced optimism you dial the number, only to be greeted with a terse statement that so-and-so is unavailable, followed by the infuriating comment: “Please try again later”.

Whatever happened to: “I’m sorry sir, Mr Bloggs is out of the office but if you leave your name and number, I’ll get him to phone you as soon as he returns.”

Service with a sneer, it appears, is here to stay.
