Stay safe this summer

2015-10-27 06:00

AFTER a cool winter many look forward to throwing off their woollies and returning to the outdoors for afternoon braais, picnics and lazing around the pool or at the beach with family and friends.

An unfortunate fact is that every year, as the days warm up and the temperatures increase, so too do the number of petty crimes such as theft.

Ivan Govender, KZN ADT Security district manager advises residents to follow these simple safety tips:

· If you leave windows open to allow cool air in your home be sure to keep valuables away from windows or out of sight.

· Close windows when you are not at home to avoid tempting opportunistic criminals.

· Shrubs, bushes and trees tends to grow much faster during the summer months – please ensure that foliage is kept trimmed to improve visibility in and around your property.

· Don’t leave ladders, spades or tools outside as these can be used as break-in tools.

· Ensure windows are fitted with good quality burglar bars.

· When going out ensure you lock and secure all windows and doors – sliding doors can be secured simply by placing a piece of timber cut to size in the sliding rail.

· Always secure garden sheds, storage huts and domestic quarters.

· Ensure your perimeter fencing and/or walls are in good condition and that there is adequate lighting around your garden and home.

· Consider installing outside beams as an added security measure and if already installed ensure they are activated at night or when you are out.

It is extremely important to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

If something or someone seems out of place, contact the local SAPS or your private security company immediately. - Supplied
