THE Upper Highway community are urged to think twice before letting anyone into their home and hearts. This warning comes after a number of alleged thefts by a 16-year-old girl were reported at the Hillcrest and Pinetown SAPS over the past month.

According to Hillcrest SAPS CPF spokesperson Steven King, the girl either walks around in her school uniform or a Springbok rugby jersey.

He said she has been charged on numerous occasions, but is then released into the care of her aunt or brother.

“Her modus operandi is to play on the heart strings of her victims by telling them how her parents have died leaving her orphaned. She also claims to have been raped and abused,” said King.

“She walks the neighbourhood streets ringing doorbells and begging her way into people’s homes. When she leaves she normally leaves with either a wallet or cellphone. She also likes to hitchhike and when given a lift people soon realise that she has ripped them off.”

King said she has now acquired the nickname and#034;school girland#034;.

He urged those who have had dealings with her and who have fallen victim to her to contact him urgently so he can get her charged with as many cases as possible.

He said that he picked her up last Friday when she approached him with the same tactic and handed her over to SAPS, who charged her with theft.

“She was released into her guardian’s care and less that 48 hours later she added a new victim to her long list.

“We need to get this con artist off of the streets and either get her rehabilitated or find a way to keep her safe.

“We also need to investigate this case further as there may be more to the story.”
