FEVER reporter Phindile Shozi spoke to Courtney Demmerk, who is a cashier, to find out more about the challenges she faces at work and how she deals with them.

  • What’s the most challenging thing about being a cashier?
  • Some customers take out their frustrations on us. They seem to forget that we are also human beings like them and then at the end of the day, we will be told that cashiers don’t treat the customers well.

PS: What change would you like to see in customers?

CD: Attitude and aggressiveness. They should always smile, be happy, even though they are not because they end up taking out all their burdens on us.

PS: What do you enjoy about being a cashier?

CD: Interacting with the lovely customers who value our services and don’t treat me like someone who doesn’t seem important in their lives — the customers who smile at you for no good reason but because they are grateful for our good services.

PS: Would you like to change anything about your cashiering job?

CD: Actually nothing, because the hours are good, lots of the customers are nice and others not, but that has never pushed me into thinking twice about the choice of my job.

PS: What would be your advice to other cashiers?

CD: I know we are sometimes made fun of, but don’t let that get into your head as those who make us a joke are also being made fun of by others.

Just do your job the best way possible and stop worrying about what other people think about you as that won’t get you anywhere.

Also think carefully when dealing with money and change.

PS: If you weren’t a cashier, what would you have been?

CD: A chef, but being a cashier is a stepping stone for me because I’m near chefs who prepare food each and every day and who knows, maybe one day I’ll be the one preparing the food.

PS: What does your typical leisure day look like?

CD: Relaxing and going out to do some shopping.
