SERVING the community has always been an interest of Bianca Ivankovic, which lead her to establishing her own non-profit company (NPC) called Shap Shap Cinema.

The “cinema” offers audio-visual tutorials in Zulu for early childhood development, high-school tutoring and many “life-improvement” subjects such as a cooking show for healthy meal preparation, career guidance, self-defence, HIV/Aids, TB and diabetes awareness, study guides and entrepreneurship, etc. for many underprivileged communities.

My main goal is to educate and uplift the community by creating educational content in Zulu which covers the topics that people living in rural areas want to know about, and on which they do not always receive information, she said.

“We want to share information that can help people improve their lives and inspire individuals to try something new that may change their futures. Our tutorials are for absolutely everybody. The young and the old. They cover such a wide array of topics that everyone will find interest in them.”

Ivankovic said she works full-time for the NPC and has a second job in order to be able to fund all the things that are needed for the NPC.

“I have a second job as a chef and it’s hard juggling the two but it’s lovely to do it because we get to interact with children and old people,” she said.

Ivankovic said they are going to have a health day where people can get tested for many things. “The health day is when people from different places are able to visit us to get tested for HIV, diabetes and many other diseases. The machines and stuff that are being used to test them cost a lot so we need funds to get them as we are an NPC,” said Ivankovic.

She said getting medication and nurses who will examine the people will also cost money. “We buy the medication we give to people and also have to pay the nurses and counsellors who help those in need, so the funds assist with those costs,” she said.

She appealed to the community to assist where they can as the costs are becoming too much for her to incur on her own.

She said she would also appreciate it if someone could help them by donating a car to carry the equipment when they are going to do tutorials. “My car is too small to carry such heavy stuff and I don’t want to get stuck as it happened to me before,” she said.

Ivankovic will be hosting a fundraising event to raise funds for the cause. “I will be holding a ‘Party for a Purpose’, on March 10 at 6 pm, which will be a fabulous evening of exquisite dining at Butlers Restaurant in Hillcrest, with a three-course meal and some laugh therapy with Jem Atkins and Mo Vawda of On Fire Entertainment, and the sweet songs of Carmen Rodrigues,” said Ivankovic.

“The event is in aid of Shap Shap Cinemas and I would appreciate it if people could attend,” she said. Tickets are R250, booking essential. For details or to book, phone 073 290 9816 or shapshapcinemas@gmail.com
