TONY de Freitas’s love for painting began when he was young and he decided to do it professionally 17 years ago.

De Freitas runs art workshops and works from his studio at his home in Drummond overlooking the Valley of 1000 Hills.

Fever reporter Nosipho Mkhize chatted to him to find out more about his life and art work.

NM [Nosipho Mkhize]: Where are you from? And where do you reside now?

TF [Tony de Freitas]: I was born and grew up in Johannesburg. Then I lived in Hermanus for 15 years in the south west Cape. However, I now reside in Drummond.

NM: Tell me about your childhood memories.

TF: As far back as I can remember I loved drawing. I had a happy childhood filled with a love for music and soccer.

NM: I believe you are an artist, tell me a bit about your work.

TF: I’m an impressionist landscape artist. I work in my studio at home and exhibit my paintings in many prestigious galleries around the country, as well as in California.

NM: What inspires you?

TF: I’m largely driven by the desire to capture the play of light on objects. Mainly the light in nature and architecture. I love impressionism where realistic subjects are stated very abstractly and without obvious definition, leaving the viewer’s eye to complete the subject.

NM: When did you start painting?

TF: As a young child I was always drawing. My gran was artistic. I started painting water colours at school.

NM: Take me through your journey as an artist.

TF: I achieved an art prize in matric and when I was about 30 years old I started painting more seriously, doing portraits and landscapes. At the age of 50, in 2000, I began to paint full time. In 2003, I started using oils and acrylics. Later that year I was approached by a gallery owner who became my agent and distributed my art in many top galleries in SA. In 2010, my wife Odile took over the promotion of my paintings and continues to do so very successfully and competently.

NM: What are the challenges you face as an artist?

TF: To keep growing as an artist, technically and inspirationally, finding fresh subjects and trying new approaches. To keep up with the constant demand to supply the galleries.

NM: Tell me about your experiences as an artist.

TF: I’ve met many interesting people when conducting workshops and doing demo paintings for art groups. Painting from home has allowed me to spend quality time with my children. It’s also given me time to develop my musical skills and spiritual meditations. It has also proved to be very therapeutic in facing the stress of modern life.

NM: Give one word to describe yourself.

TF: Imaginative.

NM: What else do you do?

TF: Much of my time is devoted to studying and teaching the Bible, along with my wife and congregation.

NM: What are your other hobbies?

TF: Playing guitar and singing, and doing wedding gigs with my son.

NM: A message for young artists.

TF: Persevere with your passion.
