HAVING set his sights on becoming a professional musician when he found his voice at age eight, 15 years later Langa Mavuso is one of South Africa’s most promising up-and-coming Jazz musicians. Less than a year after making his debut, Mavuso is back with more soulful sounds and exciting prospects to bolster his growth in the local music scene.

Following the 2016 release of Mavuso’s debut EP Liminal Sketches, Red Bull Studios Cape Town has announced it will be launching Mavuso’s latest EP, ‘Home, on Wednesday, 24 May.

The studio, which focuses on providing a creative workspace and industry opportunities to both local and international artists and producers, has a global network encompassing major cities across the globe including Amsterdam, Auckland, Copenhagen, Los Angeles, London, Madrid, New York, Paris and Sao Paolo.

Mavuso said: “I had written some music recently and after speaking to one of the guys at Red Bull, mentioning that I wanted to record this music, but that my guitarist lives in Cape Town, the opportunity came about to record in the beautiful Cape Town studio with some of the very best equipment on the market.”

“All the tracks on this EP are about a past love who died five years ago. This was me speaking to this person and re-energising myself after this loss, recognising that the sun will always rise again - even after the darkest day.”

For the EP, Mavuso worked with Illa N (main producer on the project), Spoek Mathambo and Bongeziwe Mabandla who is both a folk singer and guitarist.

Inspired by jazz greats like Miles Davis and Frank Ocean, Mavuso’s talent and ambition has exciting prospects come his way.

This includes working with Black Coffee on his new project and the opportunity to create and release music videos for some of his own songs in the near future.

“Hopefully I’ll also be presented with the opportunity to perform at festivals. I’d love to be able to get out there and sing, while also just letting go with the crowd in the middle of nowhere.”
