Be careful of petty theft

2018-06-05 06:01

THERE have been reports of recurring issues of petty theft in the Upper Highway area and residents are asked to be more careful, and check if all their doors are locked and their alarms are working properly.

SA Community Crime Watch spokesperson Steven King said petty theft is an “opportunistic crime”.

He said that if a potential criminal walks past a house and sees that it has easy access, he will no doubt enter the yard and commit a crime.

He said that residents are becoming too relaxed and continue leaving windows open and doors unlocked.

He said that they report to numerous incidents where alarms were not even activated, and valuable items were in the yard.

King said that residents should always make sure that no items are lying around the yard.

“Residents should always lock the gates when leaving, and close their windows and doors.

“Also, they must activate their alarm or invest in decent lighting.”

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer Captain Linzi Smith agreed with King and said that there has also been an increase of light fittings being stolen.

However, most victims aren’t reporting these cases and so the incidents go unnoticed by the police and no patrols are performed in these “crime hot spots”.

“With the community not reporting these cases we are not being made aware and therefore cannot effectively police these crimes,” said Smith.

She urged the community to report all crime to the police.
