Book fair to assist school

2017-03-21 06:03

WHEN the owner of Lucky Bean in Assagay, mother of two, Donnae McReynolds, learnt that Abambo Primary School in the Embo Valley did not have a library, she knew she had the opportunity to make a difference.

Passionate about books and education, McReynolds will be partnering with Books2You to host a three-day book fair at Lucky Bean from 6 to 8 April.

Books2You will donate 10% of the sales for the three days towards building a library at the school.

McReynolds will also match the sales with 10% from Lucky Bean so a total of 20% of total sales will be used to select new books from the fair to donate to the Abambo Primary Library.

In addition, she encouraged the community to drop off their pre-loved books at Lucky Bean, which will be used in the library as well. Books can be dropped off from now until 19 April.

Speaking about the school, McReynolds said Abambo Primary is in Embo, just off Blessing Ninela Road.

“This school [caters for] 150 children who are among the most impoverished in the community.

“The children range in age from five to 10, from Grade R to Grade 4. Nation Changers has a group of dedicated volunteers who teach these children phonics and reading every week.

“Great strides have been made and these bright little ones are like sponges, wanting to learn. The principal, Mrs Mbuli, and her staff are desperate to
establish a library at Abambo Primary.

“There is a big classroom available for this, but shelving as well as the books are needed. They are very keen to instill a culture of learning and book appreciation in the children,” she said.

McReynolds said she is extremely ardent about this project and would love to give parents and children, who can help, an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in the

“This is also about encouraging people to get involved and to do the little things that make big differences in people’s lives.

“We can all do something, it does not have to cost a lot or any money to initiate,” she added.
