Butterflies of Krantzkloof

2018-07-17 06:00

We have an abundance of riches when it comes to butterflies in Krantzkloof Nature Reserve and the list of recorded species was recently updated by Steve Woodhall and Mark Liptrot and now includes 169 species. Bear in mind that in the whole of Europe the number of indigenous species is 142!

The reserve comprises a number of habitats, so butterflies can be found throughout the year. One of the most common species is the Broad Bordered Grass Yellow. This is a small yellow butterfly with black borders to the wings.

The male upper side is a bright chrome yellow while the females have a paler lemon colour.

They have a slow, low flight among the grass, stopping often to feed on low flowers but seldom stopping long enough for a good photograph!

They love the nectar from flower of aromatic plants such as the Wild Dagga and Hedgehog Sage (Pycnostachys) so you are most likely to spot them on or near grasslands. They also like animal scats and urine puddles so in Krantzkloof you may see massed group on Zebra dung and urine.

They breed throughout the year but there are usually two main broods, one in spring and a larger one in late summer and autumn.

You can download the full list of butterflies to be found in the reserve from the Kloof Conservancy website: www.kloofconservancy.org.za/local-info/butterflies/ - The Kloof Conservancy
