Camperdown rapist sentenced

2016-11-08 06:00

CAMPERDOWN Regional Court convicted and sentenced Mpumelelo Mzolo (20), to 12 years for rape he committed at Umsunduzi in the Othwebe area.
During June 2012 at about 9.30pm, the victim and her friend were at a tavern when they contacted the accused and asked him to walk home with them.
In the vehicle there was liquor and they all continued drinking. After they finished the alcohol, the accused suggested they go to another tavern to buy more.
On the way home the accused pulled the victim into nearby bushes.
| The victim tried to escape but the accused chased after her, severely assaulting her and eventually raping her.
The case of rape was opened at Umsunduzi station and the docket was transferred to Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation that led to the arrest of the accused.
The accused made several court appearances before he was convicted and sentenced last week.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the sentencing and applauded the police for their good work.
“This sentence will send a message to other criminals that we will trace and arrest them wherever they are hiding,” he said.
